Where can I see local wildlife and plants in Bali?

Checked October 2026 · 4 sources

Short answer

West Bali National Park is the best place for wildlife: around 190 km² of forest, mangroves and reefs that shelter the endangered Bali starling, rusa deer, monkeys and over 160 bird species. Add the Bali Botanic Garden in Bedugul for plants, the Ubud Monkey Forest for macaques, and Nusa Penida for manta rays.

In detail

West Bali National Park, in the far north-west near Pemuteran, is Bali's only national park. Guided treks of a few hours go through jungle and mangroves, and boats leave for Menjangan Island, known for its coral walls and deer that wander the shore.

The Bali Botanic Garden (Kebun Raya Bali) in Bedugul covers about 157 hectares in the cool highlands, with orchids, ferns, bamboo and old trees. It is open daily from 8 am to 6 pm and pairs well with Lake Beratan.

Underwater, Manta Point off Nusa Penida has resident manta rays all year, and ocean sunfish (mola mola) sometimes appear from July to October. Amed and Tulamben on the east coast offer easy snorkelling over reefs full of fish.

In Ubud, the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary is home to hundreds of long-tailed macaques in a temple forest. Keep food and loose items out of sight, and do not touch or feed the monkeys.

Good to know

  • Avoid attractions with caged animals for photos, such as civet cages at some coffee stops.
  • Book West Bali National Park treks and Menjangan trips with a registered guide or operator.
  • Go early in the morning for birds and calmer seas.
