Where are the best beaches in Bali?
Checked October 2026 · 2 sources
For calm swimming, choose Nusa Dua, Sanur, Jimbaran or Lovina in the north. For white sand and cliffs, head to the Bukit Peninsula: Melasti, Padang Padang, Bingin and Thomas Beach. Seminyak and Canggu suit sunsets and surf more than swimming, and East Bali has quiet coves such as Pasir Putih and Blue Lagoon near Padang Bai.
In detail
Nusa Dua and Sanur are protected by offshore reefs, so the water is usually flat, which makes them the best options for families and weak swimmers. Jimbaran Bay is also calm and known for grilled seafood on the sand at sunset.
The Bukit beaches around Uluwatu have turquoise water below limestone cliffs. Many are reached by steps, and swimming is easier at low tide at Bingin, Suluban and Melasti. Waves and currents can be strong, so stay near lifeguards.
From Kuta to Canggu, the west coast has long beaches of darker sand, good surf for beginners and lively beach bars. Swim only between the red and yellow flags; rip currents are common.
East Bali offers smaller beaches with snorkelling: Pasir Putih (Virgin Beach) near Candidasa, Blue Lagoon at Padang Bai and the black-sand bays of Amed. On Nusa Penida, Kelingking is a viewpoint more than a swimming beach: the descent is steep and the waves are dangerous.
Good to know
- Check the tide table before visiting Bukit beaches.
- Never swim where there are no flags or between two red flags.
- Bring cash for parking and sunbed rentals.
