What water activities are available in Bali?

Checked October 2026 · 3 sources

Short answer

Bali offers surfing (Kuta and Canggu for beginners, Uluwatu for experienced surfers), snorkelling and diving at Amed, Tulamben, Menjangan and Nusa Penida, where manta rays live all year. Tanjung Benoa near Nusa Dua is the centre for parasailing, jet skis and banana boats, and the Ayung River near Ubud is the main spot for white-water rafting.

In detail

Surf schools line the beaches of Kuta, Legian and Canggu, where waves are softer and boards are easy to rent. The reef breaks of the Bukit, such as Uluwatu, Padang Padang and Bingin, are for experienced surfers and work best in the dry season.

On the east coast, Tulamben's USAT Liberty wreck lies close to shore and can be snorkelled or dived easily, and Amed has calm bays with coral just off the beach. In the north-west, Menjangan Island is known for clear water and coral walls.

Nusa Penida has strong currents but famous sites: Manta Point, with resident manta rays, and Crystal Bay, where ocean sunfish sometimes appear from July to October. Some sites require advanced certification and drift-dive experience.

Sanur is good for stand-up paddle and kayaking on flat water inside the reef. Rafting trips on the Ayung River near Ubud, or the Telaga Waja in East Bali, last about two hours on the water.

Good to know

  • Choose a PADI or SSI dive centre and ask about the current before going.
  • Wear reef-safe sunscreen and a rash vest; the sun is strong on the water.
  • Check that your travel insurance covers diving and motorised water sports.
