What classes or workshops can you take in Bali?

Checked October 2026 · 3 sources

Short answer

Bali offers a wide range of hands-on classes: Balinese cooking, silver jewellery making in Celuk, wood carving around Mas and Ubud, batik, offering (canang) making, Balinese dance and gamelan, pottery, yoga, surfing and diving. Ubud is the main hub for cultural workshops. Expect from around IDR 350,000 for a cooking class and about USD 40 for a three-hour silver class.

In detail

Cooking classes usually start with a morning market visit, then you cook five to eight dishes and eat them for lunch. Long-running schools include Paon Bali in Laplapan village near Ubud and Casa Luna in Ubud, and most offer a vegetarian menu.

In Celuk, south of Ubud, silversmiths teach you to make a ring or pendant from raw silver in two to three hours, and you leave with your piece. Wood carving sessions in Mas, Ubud or Tegalalang last from 90 minutes to a full day.

Cultural classes include canang offering making, batik painting, Balinese dance and gamelan music, often taught by local families or community groups in Ubud. Pottery studios operate in Ubud, Canggu and Sanur.

For active courses, the beginner surf schools are on Kuta beach and in Canggu, while Amed and Tulamben on the east coast are popular for PADI diving and freediving courses. Ubud is the island's yoga centre, with drop-in classes and teacher trainings.

Good to know

  • Book cooking and silver classes a day or two ahead; most include hotel pickup in the Ubud area.
  • Ask for a small group or a private session for a more personal experience.
  • Check whether the price includes materials, especially for silver by the gram.
