What are the best places to take photos in Bali?

Checked October 2026 · 3 sources

Short answer

The most photographed spots are the Lempuyang "Gates of Heaven" facing Mount Agung, Ulun Danu Beratan temple on Lake Beratan, Tanah Lot at sunset, the Tegallalang and Jatiluwih rice terraces, and Kelingking on Nusa Penida. Go at sunrise: at Lempuyang, waits of 2 to 4 hours for the gate photo are common later in the day.

In detail

At Lempuyang in Karangasem, you park at the main terminal and take a compulsory shuttle up the hill. You get a queue number for the gate photo, and the "reflection" is made with a small mirror held under your phone. For no queue, shoot the gate from the side of the staircase.

Ulun Danu Beratan in Bedugul looks best in the morning mist, and Tanah Lot is a classic at sunset when the tide frames the temple rock. Taman Ayun in Mengwi and the village of Penglipuran, with its tidy traditional houses, are easier and less crowded.

For landscapes, shoot Tegallalang at sunrise, Jatiluwih in soft morning light and Tukad Cepung waterfall near Bangli in the morning, when light beams enter the cave. On Nusa Penida, Kelingking and Diamond Beach are best before the midday crowds.

Respect sacred places: do not climb shrines or pose in revealing outfits, and ask before photographing people at ceremonies. Drones are not allowed near the airport, which covers much of Kuta, Seminyak and Jimbaran, and flying over temples requires permission.

Good to know

  • Plan Lempuyang for 5.30 am, when the first shuttle runs.
  • Carry small notes to tip the gate photographer, about IDR 10,000 to 20,000.
  • Check Karangasem's weather: Agung often hides in cloud by mid-morning.
