Where can I find a villa for a retreat in Bali?

Checked October 2026 · 3 sources

Short answer

For a yoga or wellness retreat, the classic bases are Ubud and its hills, the Tabanan countryside near the Jatiluwih rice terraces, Sidemen in East Bali and Munduk in the cooler north. Look for a licensed villa with a covered shala that fits your whole group and a kitchen able to cook plant-based meals. Foreign retreat leaders also need the right visa.

In detail

Ubud gives easy access to healers, spas and sites such as the Tirta Empul water temple and the Tegallalang rice terraces. The Tabanan countryside around Jatiluwih and Munduk, near Lake Tamblingan, are greener and cooler. Sidemen has rice valleys under Mount Agung, and Uluwatu suits retreats that combine yoga and surf.

Measure the shala: each participant needs room for a mat, plus space for the teacher to move around. Check noise from roads and neighbours at practice times, mosquito protection for evening sessions and whether the space stays dry in heavy rain.

Count beds rather than bedrooms and ask for a room plan with sharing options. Confirm the kitchen can serve set menus that cover allergies, and that drivers, excursions and temple offerings can be arranged locally.

Immigration has already deported foreign teachers who led retreat sessions on a visa on arrival, calling it unauthorised work. Retreat leaders should take advice on visas and work through a licensed local venue or partner.

Good to know

  • Plan outdoor-heavy retreats between April and October, the dry season.
  • Check the Nyepi date in March: 24 hours without noise or outings can suit a silent retreat but blocks arrivals and excursions.
  • Bali Reply's local agent can shortlist retreat-ready villas with a shala.
