What should I do if I lose my passport in Bali?

Report the loss or theft to the police and get a written report, then contact the French consulate. France issues either a laissez-passer for a single trip home (EUR 50) or a one-year temporary passport (EUR 90). Before flying, go to Indonesian immigration to transfer your visa or get an exit permit for the new document.
In detail
For a theft, the French embassy requires a police report from the nearest station before you contact the consulate. A simple loss can be declared directly to the consulate. Call the Denpasar consular agency (+62 811 3960 1401) or France Consulaire (+62 21 3113 2609) to find out where to apply.
Bring the police report, a copy or scan of the lost passport or another ID, a compliant passport photo and proof of travel for the laissez-passer, or proof of address under three months old for the temporary passport. Some countries do not accept the laissez-passer for transit, so check your route.
Your visa or e-VOA is linked to the old passport number. Visit the immigration office in Denpasar or at Ngurah Rai airport with your new document and police report to transfer your stay permit or get an exit permit. Allow at least a few working days, longer in peak season.
Tell your airline and your insurer, and move your flight if needed. Overstaying your visa while you wait costs IDR 1,000,000 per day, so deal with immigration quickly.
Good to know
- Keep a scan of your passport and visa in your email.
- Carry two spare passport photos in your luggage.
- Do not book a flight home until immigration has cleared your new document.
