Where should I stay in Bali: Canggu, Ubud, Uluwatu or Seminyak?

Checked October 2026 · 3 sources

Short answer

Choose Canggu for surf, cafés and a young social scene, Ubud for rice fields, culture and wellness, Uluwatu for cliff-top views and surf beaches, and Seminyak for shopping, dining and beach clubs. Many visitors split their stay between a beach base and Ubud.

In detail

Canggu suits surfers and remote workers, with trendy cafés and nightlife, but traffic is heavy and pavements are limited. Seminyak is more polished, with boutiques, restaurants and sunset bars, and is closer to the airport.

Ubud sits inland and is greener and slightly cooler, with temples, yoga, rice terraces and waterfalls nearby. It has no beach, and the drive from the south can take one to two hours or more.

Uluwatu, on the Bukit Peninsula, offers dramatic cliffs, secluded beaches and world-class surf, with a quieter, spread-out feel. You will need a driver or scooter to get around.

For calm swimming and families, Sanur and Nusa Dua are often better choices.

Good to know

  • Base yourself in two areas at most for a one-week trip.
  • Factor in traffic: short distances can take an hour.
  • Choose stays within walking distance of restaurants if you won't ride a scooter.
