What should I pack for Bali?

Checked October 2026 · 3 sources

Short answer

Pack light, breathable clothes for 27 to 32°C heat, a light rain jacket for the rainy season from November to March, and one outfit covering shoulders and knees for temples. Add sunscreen, mosquito repellent, a basic first-aid kit and your prescriptions. Sockets are type C and F at 230 V, so French plugs work without an adapter.

In detail

Bring a sarong or buy one locally: it is required at temples such as Tanah Lot, Uluwatu and Besakih, often with a sash. A fleece or light jumper is useful for sunrise on Mount Batur or nights in the highlands around Munduk and Bedugul.

Footwear: sandals or flip-flops for daily life, plus closed walking shoes for treks, waterfalls and rice terraces such as Tegallalang or Jatiluwih. Reef shoes help on rocky beaches.

Carry medicines in their original packaging with the prescription. Some medicines, such as those containing codeine or certain ADHD treatments, are tightly controlled in Indonesia, and CBD products are illegal: check with the Indonesian embassy before you travel.

Have printed or offline copies of your passport, visa, insurance and Love Bali levy voucher. A dry bag protects your phone on boat trips to Nusa Penida or the Gili Islands.

Good to know

  • Leave space in your bag: clothes and crafts are cheap in Bali.
  • Bring reef-friendly sunscreen; imported brands cost more locally.
  • A reusable water bottle cuts plastic, as many cafes offer refills.
