Do I need travel insurance for Bali?
Checked October 2026 · 3 sources
Indonesia does not require travel insurance for entry, but government travel advice strongly recommends it. Private hospitals in Bali often ask for proof of insurance or a deposit before treating you. Medical evacuation can cost tens of thousands of pounds. Choose a policy that covers medical treatment, evacuation and the activities you plan.
In detail
Australia's Smartraveller warns that hospitals usually ask for proof of insurance, a deposit or a guarantee of payment before treatment. It says that if you cannot afford insurance, you should not travel. The UK government gives similar advice and stresses that the policy must cover medical evacuation.
Read the exclusions. Many policies only cover scooter riding if you hold a motorbike licence that is valid at home and in Indonesia, and wear a helmet. Diving, surfing and alcohol-related incidents can also be excluded.
Keep your policy number and your insurer's 24-hour emergency line on your phone. Contact the insurer as soon as you are admitted to hospital or referred to a specialist.
Good to know
- Check the policy's motorbike conditions before you rent a scooter.
- Add diving or adventure cover if you need it.
- Save your insurer's emergency number offline.
