How do I protect myself from the sun and insects in Bali?

Checked October 2026 · 3 sources

Short answer

Bali sits just south of the equator, so the sun is strong all year, even when it is cloudy. Use high-SPF sunscreen, a hat and shade between about 11 am and 3 pm. Against mosquitoes, which carry dengue and Japanese encephalitis, apply a repellent containing DEET, picaridin or IR3535 and cover up, especially at dawn and dusk.

In detail

Reapply sunscreen after swimming and every two hours. Burns happen fast on boat trips to Nusa Penida, while surfing at Uluwatu or Canggu, and on rice terrace walks where shade is rare. Drink plenty of water to avoid heat exhaustion.

The mosquitoes that spread dengue bite mainly during the day, so repellent is needed from morning, not only in the evening. Japanese encephalitis mosquitoes bite mostly between dusk and dawn, especially around rice fields in the rainy season.

Long, light clothing, rooms with screens or air conditioning, a mosquito net and coils on terraces all help. Repellents are sold in Bali minimarkets, but the strength varies: bring your own if you prefer a high concentration.

See a travel health clinic at least eight weeks before you leave to discuss vaccines. If you get a fever during or after your trip, see a doctor and mention your stay in Bali.

Good to know

  • Avoid spending the middle of the day on the beach or in the rice fields.
  • Apply sunscreen first and repellent on top.
  • Empty standing water around your villa if you stay for weeks.
