What should I do if something is stolen or lost in Bali?
Checked October 2026 · 3 sources
Report the theft or loss at the nearest police station or to the Bali Tourist Police (+62 361 759 687) and ask for a written police report, which your insurer will require. Block stolen bank cards and phones straight away, then notify your travel insurer within the deadline in your policy. If your passport is involved, also contact the French consulate.
In detail
The police report, known locally as a surat keterangan kehilangan for lost items, lists what was taken, when and where. Bring your passport or a copy and a precise list of items. Smartraveller advises always getting a written report when you report a crime.
Call your bank to block cards as soon as you notice the theft, and ask your mobile operator to suspend your SIM. Change the passwords of email, banking and social media apps that were logged in on a stolen phone.
Insurers usually ask for the police report, proof of purchase or photos of the items and proof of your trip. Read your policy: many cap the amount for electronics and cash, or exclude items left unattended.
Bag and phone snatching from passing scooters is the most common theft in busy areas such as Kuta, Seminyak and Canggu. If you lost something in a taxi or a Grab or Gojek ride, contact the driver through the app first.
