Scooter and car rental in Bali

Renting a scooter or a car is the most common way to get around Bali outside Grab and Gojek. Scooters suit short trips in Canggu, Seminyak, Ubud or Uluwatu; a car with driver is the usual choice for day trips, families and airport transfers.

What to know in Bali

  • To ride a scooter legally you need your national licence with a motorcycle category and an International Driving Permit (IDP) that shows category A. A car-only IDP does not cover scooters.
  • Many shops do not check your licence, but the police do: checkpoints became more frequent in 2026, and travel insurance often refuses claims if you rode without a valid motorcycle licence.
  • Helmets are mandatory for rider and passenger. Shops usually provide them; ask for one that fits and has a working strap.
  • Normal practice is a cash deposit or a copy of your passport. Do not leave your original passport with the shop.
  • In 2023 Bali's governor announced plans to stop tourists renting scooters; in practice rentals are still widely available in 2026, but rules and enforcement can change.
  • A car with driver usually means about 10 hours, with fuel and driver included; parking and entrance fees are often extra.

Indicative prices

  • Scooter 110 to 125cc (Honda Beat, Scoopy): about IDR 60,000 to 100,000 per day
  • Larger scooter (Vario, NMAX, ADV): about IDR 80,000 to 200,000 per day
  • Scooter by the month: from about IDR 1,500,000
  • Car with driver: about USD 50 to 80 per day (around 10 hours)
  • Self-drive car: about USD 20 to 40 per day; indicative 2026 prices

How to choose

  • Before leaving the shop, film the scooter or car all around, including scratches, tyres and the fuel level, and send the video to the owner on WhatsApp.
  • Check that the vehicle's registration paper (STNK) is in the scooter and valid; police ask for it along with your licence.
  • Agree in writing (a WhatsApp message is enough) on the deposit, the return time and who pays in case of damage or theft.
  • Avoid airport and beach kiosks for long rentals: prices are often higher, and monthly deals are easier through local shops or a trusted contact.
