Do you tip in Bali?
Checked October 2026 · 2 sources
Tipping in Bali is not required but is welcome, since local wages are low. Many restaurants and hotels already add a service charge, often 5 to 10% or more on top of tax, so check the bill first. Where none is added, leaving about 5 to 10% or rounding up is appreciated.
In detail
Typical amounts: IDR 50,000 to 100,000 for a private driver for a full day, about IDR 50,000 for a tour guide, and IDR 20,000 to 50,000 for spa therapists or hotel housekeeping.
For warungs and small cafes, rounding up or leaving small change is normal. Exceptional fine-dining service might earn IDR 50,000 to 100,000.
Tip in cash and in rupiah, handed directly to the person. Foreign coins cannot be exchanged locally.
Good to know
- Keep a stack of IDR 20,000 and 50,000 notes for tips.
- Look for 'service' or 'SC' on the receipt before adding extra.
