What happens in Bali on Nyepi (Day of Silence)?
Checked October 2026 · 3 sources
On Nyepi, the Balinese Hindu New Year, the whole island shuts down for 24 hours, from 6am to 6am the next day. The airport closes, roads are empty, and everyone, including tourists, must stay inside. Nyepi 2027 falls on Monday 8 March, per Indonesia's official 2027 holiday decree.
In detail
During Nyepi there is no traffic, no work, no entertainment and minimal lighting. Ngurah Rai International Airport suspends all flights for the full period. Local security guards called pecalang patrol the streets and send anyone outside back indoors. Mobile data may be restricted in some areas.
Hotels and villas stay open, but guests must remain on the property. Many hotels offer Nyepi packages with meals included. Hospitals continue to operate for genuine emergencies.
The evening before is lively. Villages parade huge ogoh-ogoh demon effigies through the streets, which visitors can watch. Melasti purification processions to the sea take place a few days earlier, and the day after, Ngembak Geni, is for visiting family.
Shops may close early on the eve and some ATMs may stop working, so buy food, water and cash in advance.
Good to know
- Avoid booking flights on Nyepi day and check flight times on either side.
