How do I get to Nusa Penida?

Checked October 2026 · 2 sources

Short answer

Most visitors take a fast boat from Sanur Harbour, which takes about 30 to 50 minutes. Boats run roughly from 06:30 to 17:00. Recent guides give one-way fares of about IDR 150,000 to 250,000, and booking online is often cheaper. Visitors also pay a small island entry levy, card only.

In detail

Boats usually arrive at Banjar Nyuh or Toya Pakeh on the west coast, or at Sampalan. Sanur has a pontoon, so you can board without wading. There are shorter crossings from Kusamba, and a slow car ferry runs from Padang Bai to Sampalan for vehicles.

Nusa Penida charges a tourist entry fee, reported at IDR 25,000 for adults and IDR 15,000 for children in 2025, paid by debit or credit card. Snorkelling and diving in the marine protected area cost extra.

Arrive at least 30 minutes before departure. Rough seas in the Badung Strait can delay or cancel boats, so avoid booking the last boat back on the day you fly. Roads on Penida are steep and narrow, so many visitors hire a local driver for the day.

Good to know

  • Book a return ticket with a flexible return time.
  • Take an early boat for calmer seas and fewer crowds.
  • Carry a card for the entry levy and some cash.
