Which SIM card or eSIM should I get for Bali?

Checked October 2026 · 3 sources

Short answer

For most visitors, a Telkomsel tourist SIM or eSIM is the safest choice in Bali because it has the widest coverage, including rural areas. A 30-day tourist pack costs around IDR 150,000. Travel eSIM apps are a convenient alternative you can set up before landing.

In detail

Main local networks are Telkomsel, XL Axiata, Indosat (IM3) and Smartfren. Telkomsel is pricier but strongest outside the south. XL and Indosat are cheaper and fine in Canggu, Seminyak and Ubud. Buy from official stores or convenience shops in town for better prices than airport kiosks, and bring your passport for registration.

International eSIMs, such as Airalo, Saily or Holafly, avoid queues and work immediately, though data per dollar is usually lower than a local plan.

IMEI rule: a phone brought from abroad can use an Indonesian SIM for up to 90 days without customs registration. For longer stays you must register the IMEI with Indonesian customs (Bea Cukai), at the airport on arrival or online. Phones valued over USD 500 may incur import duties.

Good to know

  • Check your phone is unlocked and eSIM-compatible before travel.
  • Long stays: register your IMEI at arrival to avoid tax penalties.
  • Download offline maps and Grab or Gojek before you land.
