Where can I buy authentic souvenirs in Bali?

Checked October 2026 · 4 sources

Short answer

For authentic souvenirs, head to the craft villages between Denpasar and Ubud: Celuk for silver, Mas for wood carving and masks, Batubulan for stone carving. Sukawati art market and Ubud market gather many crafts under one roof, and Tenganan in East Bali is the home of gringsing double ikat cloth. Buying in the villages lets you see the work being made.

In detail

Celuk, Batubulan and Mas sit along the main road from Denpasar to Ubud, so you can visit them in a single half-day with a driver. In Celuk, the workshops in the side streets often show silversmiths at work and are less pushy than the big showrooms on the main road.

Sukawati art market (Pasar Seni Sukawati) is a four-storey market selling paintings, carvings, batik and sarongs, popular with Balinese buyers too. Ubud market, renovated and reopened in 2023, sells crafts, sarongs and baskets right opposite the royal palace.

In Denpasar, Kumbasari art market by the Badung river is a cheaper, more local option for batik, homewares and small carvings. Prices are lower than in Seminyak or Kuta shops.

Tenganan Pegringsingan, a Bali Aga village in Karangasem regency, is one of only three places in the world where double ikat is woven. Villagers also sell palm-leaf drawings (lontar) and baskets from their homes.

Good to know

  • Bargain politely in markets: start at around half the first price and settle with a smile.
  • Visit markets in the morning, when stalls are calmer and vendors more open to a first sale.
  • Ask where an item was made: much market stock comes from Java or overseas.
