Who should I contact if I have a legal problem in Bali?

Short answer

For a legal problem in Bali, contact a licensed Indonesian lawyer (advokat). The French Embassy in Jakarta publishes a list of lawyers and translators, and the Denpasar consular agency (+62 811 3960 1401) can point you to it. The consulate cannot defend you, pay legal costs or intervene in a case. If you are arrested, ask for the consulate to be informed.

In detail

Only a lawyer can represent you before Indonesian police and courts. The embassy's list is a starting point, but the French authorities are not responsible for the lawyers' work or fees, so ask for a written quote and engagement letter.

If you are detained, the consulate can visit you with your consent, check detention conditions, follow the proceedings, pass messages to your family and help you find a lawyer. It cannot obtain your release, a lighter sentence or act as guarantor.

For property, leases or company matters, use a notary (notaris) and, for land deeds, a PPAT land deed official. Smartraveller notes that disputes over villas and short-term rentals are common in Bali and advises getting legal advice before you pay or sign anything.

Official documents for Indonesian authorities often need a sworn translator (penerjemah tersumpah). The embassy's list also includes translators.

Good to know

  • Never sign a document you cannot read without a translation.
  • Keep copies of all contracts, receipts and messages.
  • Call the embassy's 24-hour line (+62 811 1954 3123) in case of arrest.
